Eco1 Biogas Digester FAQ’s

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Biogas Digester?
The eco1biogas digester, put simply, transforms organic biomass into energy and slurry.
How does that work?
It works anaerobically (without oxygen) to create methane gas. You put in biomass – you get out methane and fertilizer.
What is biomass?
All kinds of organic matter such as cow or pig manure, vegetables, grass, weeds, leftover food and even waste cooking oil.
What does it look like?
The Biogas Digester system comprises of a 3000ltr tank, similar to a septic tank, plus an expansion tank to aid the process.
What is it made from?
HDPE – High Density Poly Ethylene – which is a very high quality and lasting form of plastic
Who is the target market?
Our target market is a farmer with two or more cows – or six pigs.
How much biomass (cow dung) do they have to put in to make it work?
The tank is often used by farmers for cow dung/waste. A mixture of 50/50 dung and water is used. Three 16 ltr buckets per day for the 3000ltr tank.
How much gas and fertilizer does this produce?
This produces up to 3 hours of cooking from methane a day – and about 1000 ltrs anaerobically treated organic slurry, which is a great fertilizer for rice and all other crops. This 1000 ltr can be mixed with 9000 ltr of water – producing 10,000ltr of fertilizer per month.
Can the Eco1 biogas digester be used in a normal home for food waste?
The 3000ltr tank is aimed at farmers with two or more cows – and is generally too big for a normal household. We will be working on different size models in the future.
How can the farmer save money by using the eco1biogas digester?
The Eco1 biogas digester produces up to three hours of cooking a day, meaning there is no need to buy gas or kerosene. The farmer does not have to buy chemical fertilizer, meaning he has bigger healthier crops.
How does it help the environment?
Cooking with methane is much cleaner than cooking with kerosene. People cooking on open wood fires suffer from serious health / chest problems, especially children. Using a biogas digester also means that country people do not cut down the forest for fuel wood. This type of energy has a very positive effect on climate change.
How long does it take for the farmer to get a return on his investment?
Around two years – then he is making a profit for life
How long does the eco1biogas digester last for?
That is difficult to answer- but we estimate at least fifty years.
Does the eco1biogaster require some kind of maintenance?
No – simply feed the biomass in every day
What advantage does the eco1biogas digester have over competitors?
  • It is buried in the ground – leaving a very small footprint
  • It last for many years
  • It is very low maintenance
  • It highly scalable – we can produce hundreds or thousands in a reasonably short time
  • We will (in future) produce models of different sizes.
  • Our biogas digester comes with a double burner cooker, pressure gauge, gas scrubber, pipes and bends and labour all included in the price.
